Rock and RollAn encore in 1971 and then a standard
show opener from late 1972 until 1975, "Rock and Roll" originally appeared on
the fourth album. The song spontaneously created itself in the middle of a
frustrating session working on "Four Sticks". John Bonham impatiently
played the first few bars of Little Richard's "Keep a-Knockin'", and Page
improvised a guitar part on the spot. In three or four takes, a Zeppelin standard
was born which was played frequently throughout the balance of the band's stage career.
"Rock and Roll" was combined with "Whole Lotta Love" as an
encore in 1977, and in 1979 and 1980 it was again played by itself. Led Zeppelin
singer Robert Plant has often named the track as one of his favorites. Perhaps as a
result it has been performed at the several reunions of the surviving members of Led
Zeppelin, and was played often as a final encore on the Page and Plant tours of 1995 and
1998. Back to the Setlist page |
