Whole Lotta LoveThe archetypal Led Zeppelin song, it
originally appeared on Led Zeppelin II in 1969 and completely
revolutionized "hard rock". Its stage debut was at the
legendary San Francisco concerts in 1969, and eventually it became the
launch pad for some of live rock's most amazing improvisational moments,
some of the most notable occurring during the 1971 Japanese tour.
Zeppelin threw dozens of different songs into the middle of "Whole
Lotta Love" from 1970-1972, but by 1973 the song and its added
components became more choreographed. By the time of the 1975 and
1977 tours only a few bars of it were played as an introduction to
"Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog" during the encore.
In 1979 and 1980 it was revived with a new arrangement, and served again
as a fertile palette for the band's musical ideas ten years after its
release. The band applied new technologies and ideas to further
develop "Whole Lotta Love", which was already larger than life
and obviously destined to signify Led Zeppelin and an aspect of their
music far into the future. Back to the Setlist page |
