Stairway to HeavenThe most requested track in rock radio
history, "Stairway to Heaven", which first appeared on Led Zeppelin's fourth
album, will endure as one of the twentieth century's most memorable musical
statements. First rehearsed in late 1970, the song could not have been identified as
one of the defining moments in the annals of rock when it debuted in Belfast, Northern
Ireland on March 5, 1971. "Stairway to Heaven" has been played at several
reunions of the surviving members, most notably at the Philadelphia Live Aid show in 1985.
Page used an instrumental version of his famous song to end the ARMS concerts in
the early 80's, and a brief acoustic version was performed on a Tokyo TV show in 1994 to
promote the first Page and Plant tour. However, "Stairway to Heaven" has
not been performed by the duo since their return to the stage except for a few bars at the
end of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". Despite funny parodies such as in the
film "Wayne's World", "Stairway to Heaven" is still regularly
requested by those for whom the song will always hold a special and personal meaning. Sound Clips Back to the Setlist page |
