One of Plant's more unconventional
lyrics, to be sure, "Royal Orleans" refers to the hotel at 621
St. Louis street in New Orleans' famous French quarter where the band
liked to hang out when they were in town. Legend has it that
during one of their visits, the band had gone carousing in the local gay
bars, which they preferred to the typical tourist-filled watering holes
and the celebrity hassles that accompanied them. After a good
sousing, one of the members of the band (who shall remain nameless)
stumbled back to the Royal Orleans in the company of a drag queen, who
wasn't discovered until the next morning - Barry White and
"Whiskers!", indeed! Page was later often seen in the
quarter performing with local luminaries in such legendary spots as the
Old Absinthe bar, before it was turned into a tacky neon frozen drink
stand. Two takes can be heard in the Presence rehearsals from
October to November 1975, but other than the studio track, no other
recorded versions of this track exist, as it was never performed live.
