Gallows PoleThis song was originally written by
legendary Louisiana "hollerin'" blues and folk artist
Leadbelly, who called it "Gallis Pole" as well as
"Gallows Line" and "Maid Freed From the Gallows".
The song called "Gallows Pole" which appeared on Led Zeppelin
III in 1970 featured a pastoral sound created by many different
instruments and was very far removed from the molten, principally
electric riffs on Led Zeppelin's previous albums. A vehicle for
Jimmy Page's first experiments with a banjo, it also features 6- and
12-string acoustic guitars as well as an electric lead guitar. At
KB Hallen, Copenhagen on May 3, 1971, "Gallows Pole" as well
as "Four Sticks" received their first and final performances,
though "Gallows Pole" was referred to during performances of
other songs such as "Trampled Underfoot" on the 1975 tours. Back to the Setlist page |
