Custard PieThe first track on the landmark double
album Physical Graffiti, Custard Pie is an emphatic, boot-to-the-groin
statement from Headley Grange that Zep was back to its roots of
staggeringly heavy rock. Taking inspiration from sources all the
way back to Blind Boy Fuller's 1939 track "I Want Some of Your
Pie", as well as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee's "Custard Pie
Blues" in 1947, there's some additional influence from Bukka
White's "Shake 'em On Down" as well as from Big Joe Williams' "Drop
Down Mama" evident here, itself drawn from the 1935 Sleepy John
Estes track "Drop Down Daddy". John Paul Jones plays a mean
clavinet on this one, and Page's piercing solo is processed through an
ARP synthesizer. Unfortunately never performed live until Page
performed it on his Outrider tour, and again later at Jason Bonham's
wedding in 1990, "Custard Pie" was actually rehearsed for
possible inclusion in the 1975 concerts, but didn't make the cut. Back to the Setlist page |
