The Crunge                    Houses of the Holy

Born at the famous Stargroves sessions in 1972, it was originally a drums and bass workout for Bonham and Jones.  Plant added some lyrics paying homage to the James Brown funk vibe, throwing in a bunch of references to other artists such as Wilson Picket and Otis Redding, and one of his most famous ad-libs, in his best Masterpiece Theatre accent, "Where's that Confounded Bridge?"  Page and engineer George Chkianz can be heard asking Bonzo if he's "ready to rock" at the beginning of the studio track.  A dance step diagram to this number was considered for inclusion on the cover of the record, and in retrospect, it's a good thing it never happened.  Though never performed by itself, "The Crunge" first appeared inside "Dazed and Confused" in 1972 and 1973, and then later as part of "Whole Lotta Love" at Los Angeles and Earl's Court in 1975.  We like to use it as an excuse for Will to break out the theremin, while Brian and Dennis pound away, improvising on the infectious groove.
